“Abstract Opera nr 1” was written by a German composer Boris Blacher. The opera is a pseudo-opera, that has non-narrative themes nor characters. The whole piece is a collection of separate situations and different states of consciousness, that are strictly choreographed. In the original piece there were two clowns – one optimistic and one pessimistic, performing conversations in-between the scenes. In our version the gaps are filled by improvised music reflecting the emotions of each scene. Performed by the students of contemporary improvisation department.

Our objective was to create a “nowhere land”, where the characters – humanoids, live their lives and deal with different issues.
For the stage we created an abstract world including costumes for the actors. Costumes and elements on the stage represent through colour psychology, specific design messages and emotions which are presented to the audience during the scenes.
The final touch was given by the whole-body make-up, which separated the robotic elements from the human body.
